Back Home

Arts and Social Sciences faculty members Erdağ Aksel, Murat Germen and Selçuk Artut join the 12th “Contemporary Istanbul” with a number of works.

“Contemporary Istanbul”, the international contemporary arts fair that brings together artists from Turkey and the world, will take place between September 14 and 17 at the Istanbul Convention Center and Istanbul Lütfi Kırdar International Convention and Exhibition Hall in Harbiye.

Erdağ Aksel joins Contemporary Istanbul in the Galeri 44A booth with three works in various techniques: "Öyle Bir Şey3", "Crescent Disabled" and "Karşılaştırmalı Belirsizlik". Erdağ Aksel will also join the "Fifth Element" sculpture exhibition under the curatorship of Hasan Bülent Kahraman in Contemporary Istanbul.

Murat Germen will exhibit eight works in collaboration with three different galleries (ALANistanbul, Bozlu Art, Mixer). Germen has recently been working on converting photography to 3D, and his work "Cascade" on display at Contemporary Istanbul consists of photographs affixed on 648 pine blocks that are 5 x 5 cm in size, creating a topography of their own.

Selçuk Artut’s work will be on display with the Zilberman Gallery. It is titled "Segments Serie 1."

About Contemporary Istanbul

Contemporary Istanbul has been drawing the leading galleries, contemporary artists, art institutions, collectors, and art circles for 11 years. Contemporary Istanbul builds bridges between the global and Turkish contemporary art scenes.  In furtherance of its mission, Contemporary Istanbul is being held concurrently with the 15th Istanbul Biennial this year rather than in November to capitalize on the synergies between art institutions and galleries.  Held in the Istanbul Convention Center and Istanbul Lütfi Kırdar International Convention and Exhibition Hall, the fair promises many new and interesting examples to purveyors of art.

CI plays a large part in the development of the contemporary art market in Turkey, and in addition to being an international art platform, it is a cherished value of Istanbul. The 12th edition of CI hosts a number of well-established galleries and institutions in addition to many new galleries and foreign representatives.

The theme for the 2018 edition of the annual Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards given by Sabancı University is "Challenges To Democratic Governance And Living Together In Turkey And The World." The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2018.

The Sakıp Sabancı International Research Award involves a Jury Prize that will be awarded to an individual who has made distinguished contributions on the above-mentioned theme. In addition to the Jury Prize, Essay Awards will be given to three researchers under 45 years of age. An independent and international jury will select the Essay Award and Jury Prize awardees.

Award Theme:

More than two decades ago, Zbigniew Brzezinski alerted us to a “global turmoil,” steadily stifling the international society’s, and especially the West’s ability to respond to major global challenges. Since then, the West has been in the grip of the multiple crises of globalization, manifested by a myriad of unprecedented and effective security, economic, humanitarian and environmental challenges. While existing democracies have failed to tackle effectively the multiple crises of globalization, a wave of populist movements have begun to shape and frame politics and governance in not only Western democracies, but also in developing countries. These movements, either in government or in opposition, feed on challenges to democracy such as the democratic disconnect between economy and politics, refugee flows and the failures of multiculturalism. Essays providing path-breaking and innovative analyses on these and similar challenges to democratic governance and living together, their causes and impacts, as well as the movements which they foster and the alternative solutions which can be sought are welcome.

A packaging film coated with clay nanotubes developed by Sabancı University was presented at the 254th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Washington, D.C.

A packaging film coated with clay nanotubes, developed as part of a TÜBİTAK ARDEB 1003 project by Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM) Researcher Hayriye Ünal as implementer and Sabancı University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Dean Yusuf Menceloğlu, Sabancı University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Member Fevzi Çakmak Cebeci and Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Research and Development Center (TÜMER) Researcher Serkan Ünal as advisors was presented at the 254th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Washington, D.C.

Nano-clay packaging can prevent economic losses from spoilage

Over the past two decades, scientists have been developing alternative ways to preserve food, with an extensive focus on packaging. Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM) Researcher Hayriye Ünal and her team developed a packaging film coated with clay nanotubes packed with an antibacterial essential oil. The film prevents over-ripening and microbial growth, which could help improve the shelf life of perishables.

Discussing the project, Hayriye Ünal said "Food packaging that is capable of interacting with food can contribute to safety and prevent economic losses from spoilage" and added that low-cost packaging could be custom-designed for specific food types.

Effectiveness tested on tomatoes, bananas and chicken

The team wrapped tomatoes, bananas and chicken in the film to test its effectiveness over varying amounts of time compared to foods wrapped in plain polyethylene. After 10 days, tomatoes wrapped with the new film were better preserved than the control vegetables. In addition, the new film helped bananas stay more firm and keep their vibrant yellow color after six days compared to the control fruit. And chicken enveloped with the experimental film and refrigerated for 24 hours showed significantly less bacterial growth than chicken in plain polyethylene.

Hayriye Ünal said that they continued their efforts to prove the food safety of nano-clay coated packaging film, an invention patented by Sabancı University, which is necessary before the product can be marketed.

“QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) Top Universities Under 50" rankings were revealed. The system uses the same methodology as the QS World University Rankings to determine the top universities under 50 years of age.  Sabancı University ranked between 61st and 70th.

Reputation has greater weight in the QS system, and reputation accounts for 50% of the total score, which enables younger universities to compare their visibility and outreach. The "Under 50" rankings evaluates universities on six indicators based on four criteria determined to be relevant to prospective students, namely research, teaching quality, employability and international outlook.

Four of the indicators are based on “hard” data, and the remaining two on major global surveys – one of academics and another of employers. The weight of the indicators based on hard data are 20% for student-to-faculty ratio; 20% for citations per faculty; 5% for international faculty ratio and 5% for international student ratio.  The weight of the survey indicators are 40% academic reputation and 10% for employer reputation.

The Turkish institutions among the 150 young universities worldwide were Sabancı University as well as Bilkent and Koç Universities in the 51st-60th range, and Çukurova University in the 101st-150th range. Four Turkish universities were on the rankings this year.

Sabancı University Faculty Member and Corporate Governance Forum Director Melsa Ararat was elected for the third time to membership of the board of governors of ICGN (International Corporate Governance Network), a community that brings together asset managers and investors representing USD 26 trillion of capital. Melsa Ararat continues to be the first and only academic sitting on the ICGN board of governors, which has the power to influence investments and financial markets, particularly in the UK and US, through publishing guidances, discussion papers and surveys.

Sabancı University faculty member and Corporate Governance Forum Director Melsa Ararat was elected to the Board of Governors of the ICGN (International Corporate Governance Network) for the third time in the Annual Conference held in Kuala Lumpur on July 10th, 2017. Initially elected in 2015 and now elected for a third time, Ararat continues to be the only member from emerging markets and only academic member of the ICGN board of governors.

Members of the ICGN board of governors have included corporate investment experts from around the world, and the regulatory authorities of Asian stock exchanges and capital markets. The agenda of this year's conference consisted of best practices for investors' monitoring and supervision obligations regarding the companies they invest in, general stability in financial markets, and economic growth. The conference began with a plenary session on "Redefining Capitalism for a Sustainable Global Economy" and featured academics from Malaysia, Singapore and Japan as speakers.

Melsa Ararat commented, “It is a vast responsibility to sit on the board of ICGN, an organization that influences corporate investment and asset management policies worldwide. I am proud to represent Sabancı University in this organization." Ararat explained that the main theme of this year's annual conference was systemic risks, and continued, "Investors are concerned more than ever about income disparity, cyber risks, and political risks. A popular subject this year was the state- or government-controlled investment and portfolio companies operating in some of the most developed financial markets in Asia. Speakers drew attention to the risks accompanying such organizations in autocratic regimes where democratic penetration is low. The possibility of preferential treatment in regulatory and judicial proceedings was brought up by speakers, who emphasized the importance of understanding the intersection points of corporate governance and public governance. The discussions here contained valuable lessons for the governance of the Asset Fund in Turkey."

Currently a governor member of ICGN's Business Ethics and Systemic Risk Committee, Ararat was among the team that created the Capital Markets Board Corporate Governance Principles first issued in 2003. Ararat is the founding director of the Corporate Governance Forum established by Sabancı University and TÜSİAD in 2002, and has been the coordinator of the global research network supported by IFC and focused on emerging markets since 2006.  Ararat has contributed to the majority of research projects on corporate governance in Turkey, and had served as CEO and board member in various multinational companies in the Far East, Japan and Europe, while becoming an expert on joint venture governance prior to joining Sabancı University.
